Case Study: Root Science — Science + Nature in Skincare E-Commerce

Root Science is a premium skincare brand that combines scientifically active ingredients with Nordic botanicals. Their website (shoprootscience.com) needed to reflect that balance of purity and efficacy, appeal to users seeking clean beauty and results, and convert those visitors into loyal customers. The site must present product lines, ingredient transparency, skincare concerns, and brand positioning clearly while delivering a refined user experience.
My Role and Approach
As the designer and strategist for this engagement, my role was to channel the brand’s ethos of trustworthy science and natural beauty into a compelling digital presence. I focused on user flows that guide visitors from learning about their skin, through discovering relevant product lines, to purchase. I also emphasized visual clarity, ingredient storytelling, and trust signals that reassure prospective customers in the beauty / skincare space.
The Challenge
Before redesigning or optimizing the site, the following challenges needed to be solved:
- The brand must clearly communicate both scientific strength and botanical purity without feeling clinical or cold.
- Customers have various skin concerns (wrinkles, dark spots, sensitivity, clogged pores) so product discovery must be very targeted.
- Ingredient skepticism is high in skincare; users want transparency and proof.
- The site must balance rich visuals (product photography, botanical imagery) with fast performance and mobile friendliness.
- Convincing visitors to convert (especially into repeat buyers) in a crowded skincare market requires compelling trust, social proof, and incentives.
The Solution
- Balancing Design with Identity
I used a clean, light aesthetic with carefully selected imagery of natural botanicals and product closeups. Accent tones and typography suggest sophistication and clinical credibility. Hero banners and product showcases bring an immediate impression of elegance and clarity. - Targeted Browsing by Concern & Category
The shop is organized both by product category (cleansers, toners, treatments, masks, eye care) and by skin concern (fine lines, dark spots, dryness, clogged pores, sensitivity). This dual approach gives users clear, relevant paths depending on whether they know what they want or are still exploring. - Ingredient Transparency & Science Storytelling
Dedicated pages (Our Ingredients & Process, The RS Difference, Nordic Antioxidant Complex) explain why each component matters. Users can understand how actives behave, and why formulations were chosen. The site emphasizes “clinically-proven actives,” “no unnecessary fillers or fragrance,” and science + nature synergy. - Trust Signals & Social Proof
The homepage and product pages feature customer reviews and star ratings (e.g. Arctic-C serum rated 4.95 of 5) to show real user satisfaction. Press mentions (“Featured In”) are displayed to enhance brand credibility. - Incentives & Retention Mechanisms
A “Give $30, Get $30” program encourages referrals or returning customers. Promotions like “Save 15% on your first order” encourage first purchase. - Performance & Usability
Because skincare sites tend to use many images and detailed visuals, the site is optimized to load smoothly. Responsive design ensures the experience is seamless across mobile and desktop. Key calls to action like “Add to Cart” or “Take the Skin Quiz” remain prominent.

The redesigned or strategically refined experience enabled Root Science to:
